GENOA

Genova or Genoa's (3rd century B.C.) name originated from the Roman god Janus (Giano in Italian) protector god of all passageways including the door to one's home or the gates of a city. Very expansive in its territorial possessions throughout 5 centuries and strengthening its maritime leadership with the alliance between Admiral Andrea Doria and The Spanish Empire (Carlo V 1528). It was from Genoa that Garibaldi started his expedition of the Thousand which eventually led to the constitution of the Kingdom of Italy. Today the port of Genoa has reassumed its position as one of the most important port cities in the Mediterranean. Must see: San Lorenzo Cathedral, Church of Gesù, San Giovanni Pré, La Lanterna, Royal Palace, P.zza S. Matteo.

GENOA AQUARIUM

The Acquario di Genova (Genoa Aquarium), designed by architects Renzo Piano and Peter Chermayeff, is one of the biggest aquariums in Europe, covering 10,000 square meters and containing 71 display tanks. These tanks recreate the habitat of the Mediterranean and other oceans, the North and South Poles, and the tropics, and contains over 500 sea and ocean-dwelling species, which live and reproduce here in the Aquarium. Visitors get the chance to see close-up the secret lives of fish, molluscs, sharks, dolphins, jellyfish, and many other creatures such as crocodiles, frogs, snakes, penguins, and seals. The mission of the Acquario di Genova is to educate and inform the public about the responsible management of aquatic environments.
